- 1 cup red lentils masoor dal, rinsed
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 2 tomatoes chopped
- 2 garlic cloves minced
- 1 inch fresh ginger grated
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1 –2 green chilies chopped (optional)
- 1 tbsp oil or ghee
- 2.5 cups water
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions:
Heat oil in a pot and add cumin seeds. Let them sizzle for 30 seconds.
Add chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until golden.
Add tomatoes and cook until soft. Stir in turmeric, coriander powder, and garam masala.
Add rinsed lentils, water, salt, and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for 20–25 minutes or until the lentils are soft.
Adjust consistency with more water if needed. Garnish with cilantro and serve hot.
Notes: Serve with rice, roti, or as a soup. Adjust spice level as needed.
